Book: The Innovator’s Manifesto by Michael E. Raynor
Inspiration: A lot of what happens during innovation commercialization is broad, high-level analysis around a given idea. Michael’s discussion around disruptive innovation (as positioned by Clayton M. Christensen) is a compelling augment to the predictive viability process. Using the various tools & techniques (productivity frontier, Thomas Thurston’s hypotheses), a company can also create a new way to look at their overall innovation portfolio, helping make smarter decisions about which ideas to pursue and push into commercialization analysis.
Raynor’s expanded coverage of Christensen’s disruption theory alone makes this book a must-read for those involved with innovation. That said, there are countless nuggets of wisdom and great takeaways that will bolster anyone’s innovation toolkit.
